Pumpkin patches, corn mazes abound in Chicago suburbs

After a long summer, the pumpkins are bright orange and perfectly plump and the corn stalks are taller than some professional basketball players.

All around the country, pumpkin farms and corn mazes are ready for families to spend a day making memories.

Here are some suburban Chicago pumpkin farms, apple orchards and corn mazes. As always, it’s a good idea to check the website or call if you’ve got questions.

Abbey Farms: Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesdays to Sundays and Columbus Day to Oct. 30. 2855 Hart Road. Admission: $15 weekdays; $20 online/$22 at the gate weekends. 630-966-7775; Abbeyfarms.org.

Pumpkin Daze attractions include a corn maze, hay wagon rides, a you-pick pumpkin patch, slide, zip lines, jumping pillow, petting zoo and farm store. There’s a craft beer and wine tent plus live music on weekends.

Johansen Farms Children’s Zoo and Fall Festival: Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily to Oct. 31; 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Columbus Day in October. 710 W. Boughton Road. There’s an open market area, air slides, inflatables, pumpkin patch, hayrides, mini golf, barnyard animals and pony rides on the weekends. Trick-or-Treat at the Zoo Oct. 30-31.

Dollinger Family Farm: Hours are 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. daily to Oct. 30. 7420 E. Hansel Road. Admission: free, some activities have a fee. Tickets available for purchase online for corn maze, face painting and train rides. 815-467-4698; Dollingerfarms.com.

There’s a four-acre corn maze, pumpkin patch, farm animals, bee barn and play areas. Train rides, hay rides and face painting weekends. Dave DiNaso’s Traveling World of Reptiles Sept. 25. Native American exhibit available Saturdays. Engine Shop open weekends with homemade fudge, doughnuts, mini pies, caramel apples and other treats for sale.

Siegel’s Cottonwood Farm: Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily Sept. 24-Oct. 31. 17250 S. Weber Road. Admission: $19.95 weekdays, $24.95 weekends and Columbus Days. Weekend and Columbus Day all-inclusive and combo passes $27.95-$36.95. After-school special $11.95. Children 2 and under free. There are more than 35 activities at the farm, including a 10-acre corn maze (weekends and Columbus Day only), Cottonwood Railroad train and pick-your-own pumpkin patch. There are lots of food and beverage options and a country store. Some activities run weekends only.

Windy Acres Farmstand Fall Fest: Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily to Oct. 31. 37W446 Fabyan Parkway. Admission: $16 weekdays/$19 weekends. $2 less for seniors 65 and older. Kids 2 and under free. Attractions include a jumping pillow, corn maze, petting zoo, mini golf, swings, zip lines and inflatables. Grilled foods, build-your-own-corn-cob bar and a beer garden available weekends. An apple orchard is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. weekends; cost is $12.99 per person.

Bengtson’s Pumpkin Farm: Hours vary to Oct. 30. 13341 W. 151st St. Admission: $17.99-$33.99. Veterans or military personnel with ID is free. Kids age 1 and under free. 708-301-3276; Pumpkinfarm.com.

Attractions include the Barnstormer Wave Swinger, Rooster Rodeo coaster ride, a giant swing, six-lane Mega Fun Slide, selfie station, playground, train rides, petting zoo, pig races and pumpkin patch.

Konow’s Corn Maze: Hours are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdasy; 3-8 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays and 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Sundays to Oct. 30. 16849 S. Cedar Road. This farm offers a large and kiddie corn maze, two corn cribs, two jumping pillows, hayrides, trike tracks, cow train express, animal barn, concessions, gift shop and more. Weekends, they have pony rides, a magician, a balloon artist and a face painter. Bands will perform weekends; including Boy Band Night Oct. 1, Maggie Speaks Oct. 9, Hairbangers Ball Oct. 16 and Radio Gaga Oct. 23.

The farm and corn maze will be closed Oct. 6 for the Ghouls Night Out event.

Didier Farms Pumpkinfest: Hours are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. daily to Oct. 30. 16678 W. Aptakisic Road. Admission: free; all activities and rides cost tickets. Tickets, $1 and activities cost between three and six tickets. Thursday wristband special $15 2-6 p.m. 847-634-3291; Didierfarms.com/pumpkinfest.

Attractions include a pumpkin playland, kiddie rides and petting zoo with pig races on weekends and Columbus Day.

Jonamac Orchard: Hours are 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays and Columbus Day to Oct. 31. Pick-your-own apples and pumpkins hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. to Oct. 30. The pumpkin patch will open for you-pick in mid-September. 19412 Shabbona Road. Admission: $8 weekends and Columbus Day; free weekdays. After school special, $5 after 2 p.m. weekdays. There are wagon rides, petting zoo, corn crib and jumping pillow. Haunted corn maze Fridays and Saturdays in October plus Sept. 30. Cost is $15 and tickets are available online.

Kuipers Family Farm: Fall fest hours are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sundays to Oct. 30. 1N318 Watson Road. Admission: September: $16.99 online weekends and $13.99 online weekdays; add $2 for at the gate. October: $22.99 online weekends in October and Columbus Day and $19.99 weekdays, add $2 at the gate. $11.99 seniors 65 and older and military with ID. Children 2 and under free. Jumping pillow $4 extra on weekends and Columbus Day. Admission to the apple orchard is $12.99 per person and includes a quarter-peck bag of apples. Admission includes a free pumpkin in October. There is a corn maze, haunted forest and scream shed, giant slide, pig races, petting zoo, hay wagon rides, playground and tractor tram.

Stade’s Farm and Market: Shades of Autumn Fall Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends in September and then 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday plus Columbus Day through October. The apple orchard is open for you-pick from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Pumpkin picking is from 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. weekends and Columbus Day to Oct. 31. 3709 W. Miller Road. Activities include carousel, pedal cars, corn maze, petting zoo, inflatables, jumping pillow and more. Stade’s Farm and Market has fruits and vegetables, baked goodies and more for sale.

Heap’s Giant Pumpkin Farm: Hours are 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. daily Sept. 24-Oct. 31. 4853 Route 52. Call farm for updated admission prices. 815-651-7288; Heapsgiantpumpkinfarm.com.

The corn maze and pumpkin patch are open daily; hayrides to the pumpkin patch are on weekends and Columbus Day. Other attractions include a giant slide, playground, animals, soybean maze, moonlight hayride, flashlight maze and haunted hayride.

Keller’s Farmstand: Fall fest hours are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. weekends and Columbus Day to Oct. 30. 2500 Johnson Road. Admission: $14, kids 4 and under free. Must reserve tickets online. The theme for this year’s corn maze is vampires. There are children’s activities and a play area. You-pick apples and pumpkins are available (costs extra.) Check the website for times to see an author reading from her children’s book, a professional actor performing children’s mime theater and a professional horse rider performing a “Headless Horseman” show.

Activities include animals, pedal carts, corn stalk maze, wagon rides to the field or orchard, haunted house, Western town, pumpkin eating dinosaur, train rides, giant slides, jumping pillow, corn box, pony and camel rides and pig races. Apples available for you-pick or purchase with Fall Festival admission.

Woody’s Orchard: Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursdays-Sundays and Columbus Day to Oct. 30. 3223 Creek Road. Admission: free to visit the farm market and bakery; $14 weekends, $11 Thursdays and Fridays to visit the play yard. 2 and under free. Seniors $5 daily. Admission to the orchard: one apple picking bag for every two people in your group. Bags are $11 and is a quarter-peck in size. 630-247-9300; Woodysorchard.com.

The orchard has about 20 varieties of apples. Hayrides from the store to the orchard are included. There is a two-acre pumpkin field that features 15 varieties of pumpkins available for you-pick beginning at the end of September. Play Yard activities include spider web, giant slide and hamster rollers.

Goebbert’s Farm and Garden Center: Hours are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. daily to Oct. 31. Closes at 3 p.m. Oct. 31. 40 W. Higgins Road. Admission: $18 weekdays and $22 weekends and Columbus Day ages 3 and up. Seniors $16 daily. 847-428-6727; Goebbertspumpkinfarm.com/fall-festival.

Activities include animals, giraffe barn, corn box, pumpkin eating dinosaur, jumping pillow, haunted house, camel and pony rides, gem mining and wagon rides. Animal rides, jumping pillow and gem mining cost extra.

Richardson Adventure Farm: Hours are 3-9 p.m. Thursdays, 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 12-9 p.m. Sundays and Columbus Day to Oct. 30. 909 English Prairie Road. Admission: $18-$24 for people ages 13 and up, $16-$18 ages 3-12 and those 2 and under are free. Higher rates are weekends in October. This farm boasts “the world’s largest corn maze” with up to 10 miles of trails on 28 acres of corn. The theme for this year’s maze is “60 years of James Bond.” There’s also a pumpkin patch, zip line, giant slides, pedal carts, wagon rides, Zorbing, petting zoo, pig races, jumping pillow, paintball shooting gallery, extreme air ride and more. Private wagon rides and campfire/picnic sites available for rent.

Odyssey Fun Farm Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maize: Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily Sept. 24-Oct. 30. 18900 Oak Park Ave. Admission: $19 weekdays/$24 weekends and Columbus Day. 708-429-3800; Odysseyfunfarm.com.

Activities include a pumpkin patch, petting zoo, jumping pillow, hayrides, rope maze and corn box. Zip line, pony rides (weekends only) and zombie paintball gallery cost extra. This year’s corn maze will be Peter Pan-themed.

Honey Hill Orchard: Hours are 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. daily to Oct. 31. 11783 Waterman Road. Admission: free to enter the orchard; everyone over the age of 2 years must purchase a picking bag to ride a wagon and go into the picking areas. Bags are $10-$25. 815-264-3337; http://honeyhillorchard.com.

Check the website for ripening dates and other fall weekend events, like wagon rides and food trucks.

Kroll’s Fall Harvest Farm: Hours vary to Oct. 31. Timed entry tickets are required for all guests on the weekends. 13236 W. Town Line Road. Admission: on weekdays, hayrides cost $4 per person and corn maze admission is $8 ages for 13 and older; $6 for ages 12 and under. Free for ages 2 and under. Weekends and Columbus Day, admission $14 for adults and $12 for ages 3-12 and includes hayride, corn maze and animal area. 847-662-5733; Krollsfarm.com.

Come to the farm for pumpkins (prices $2-$15), hayrides and a corn maze.

All Seasons Apple Orchard: Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. weekends and Columbus Day to Oct. 30. 14510 Illinois Route 176. Admission: barnyard tickets are $12 weekdays, $17 weekends and Columbus Day and $9-$12 weekdays. Apple-picking is $11-$17 and $15-$20 for Honeycrisp. 815-338-5637; Allseasonsorchard.com.

There is a 10-acre corn maze, jumping pillow, pedal karts, mini zip line park, bubble barn, corn box and petting zoo. On weekends, look for magic shows, pig races, cow train, apple cannon, gem mining, pony rides and pumpkin patch. Some activities cost extra.

Homestead Orchard: Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays and 12-4 p.m. through late October. 11802 Charles Road. Admission: $20 per peck of apples. 815-338-7443; Homesteadorchard.net.

Check the ripening chart on the website or call to see when your favorite variety will be ready for you-pick. Minimum purchase is one peck for a family with children and two pecks for more than four adults.

Lang’s Orchard: Hours are 11 a.m.-4 p.m. weekends into October. 17411 Secor Road. Admission: $10 per half-peck, $20 per peck. 815-568-7547; Langsorchard.com.

This orchard’s last varieties ripen in the beginning of October. Honeycrisp and Snowsweet will be sold pre-picked only.

Sonny Acres Farm: Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays-Sundays to Oct. 31. 29W310 North Ave. Admission: wristband deals $10-$25. 630-231-3859; Sonnyacres.com.

Activities include train ride, giant swing, giant slide, jumping pillow, petting zoo and amusement rides. The haunted hayride and haunted barn open Sept. 30. Some attractions only open Fridays-Sundays.
