Submitted by Julie Corriveau Wilson, Community Development Agent Wonderful things are happening in Magog. As the sun warms up and the summer is nearly here, Princesss Elizabeth Elementary school students and local community members are hard at work weeding, tilling, and planting.

The Jardin Pervana’s Garden Committee has dug deep this school year to revitalize this project. For the past eight years, Princess Elizabeth Elementary School has been home to a pedagogical and community garden. Students, teachers and daycare use this green space as a pedagogical tool and garden plots are available for rental at a low cost, supporting community connections, vitality and food security.

As mother nature would have it, after so many years the garden infrastructure needs to be replaced. Consequently, the garden committee rallied to raise funds to ensure that students and community can continue to benefit from the garden, for many more years to come. This spring, the 15 wooden garden beds were replaced by galvanized steel parcels. We are now working towards raising the necessary funds to replace the fence and shed.

As the price of groceries continue to rise, the committee is focused on developing a sustainable garden program. Students are involved in all aspects of the garden. The vegetables grown will be transformed by students into meals and snacks, enchanting their taste buds and filling their bellies. Down the road, we aim to donate the excess food to organizations supporting low-income families, teaching students the importance of give back. Lastly, as we strive to develop further community connections and partnerships, we aim to offer cooking and gardening workshops for the whole community.
