With Syracuse football expected to open preseason camp next week, the program has updated its online roster with a 2022 version. The listing provided no major surprises, but there's plenty to break down ahead of Year 7 of the Dino Babers era.

Syracuse's roster featured two notable absences: third-year redshirt freshman wide receiver Ja'Vontae Williams and fifth-year redshirt junior offensive lineman Wil Froumy.

The former was considered one of many candidates to emerge as a contributing pass-catcher. He played sparingly over the last two years, seeing action in five games in 2020 without recording a statistic. The latter was a veteran reserve not expected to be in the mix for a contributing role on offense.

Both Williams and Froumy were on the team's spring roster. 247Sports has reached out to SU Athletics seeking additional information.

Everyone else who had returning eligibility and didn't enter the transfer portal is back. And all 24 of the Orange's scholarship additions, including Florida QB transfer Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, are included on the roster.

Syracuse was unable to land a transfer defensive lineman, barring an Alton Robinson-esque late addition. Instead, the program has shifted two players to the defensive line.

Running back Josh Hough made the move mid-spring and is now listed at 315 pounds, up 60 from the weight he arrived at last summer. The second-year Pennsylvania native suffered a knee injury during preseason camp last fall and has been working his way back toward the playing field since.

Third-year redshirt freshman Garth Barclay will be flipping sides of the ball this fall. Another PA product, he provides more of a rangier option at 6 feet, 7 inches and 277 pounds.

Here are all of the scholarship players who've changed jersey numbers this offseason. Some moves were made ahead of the spring.

DB Duce Chestnut 20 --> 0

DB Ja'Had Carter 11 --> 1

WR Trebor Pena 29 --> 2

QB Garrett Shrader 16 --> 6

WR Devaughn Cooper 25 --> 7

WR Courtney Jackson 85 --> 9

LB Anwar Sparrow 21 --> 12

WR Oronde Gadsden II 89 --> 19

DB Malcolm Folk 22 --> 27

DL Josh Hough 22 --> 29

LB Austin Roon 49 --> 42

LS Aaron Bolinsky 50 --> 46

OL Enrique Cruz 71 --> 70

TE Maximilian Mang 47 --> 81

DB Alijah Clark, 180, -15 (2021 weight taken from Rutgers roster)

With so many variables involved in these numbers, it's often wise not to put too much stock into them (particularly the offensive linemen who routinely shed weight each fall). But there are a few changes worth highlighting.

Elmore has bulked up in anticipation of leading out All-American running back Sean Tucker, who is down five pounds to 205 for those wondering. Thompson is the other returning standout who's significantly changed his frame -- a move that should pay off in downhill situations, as well as be tested in coverage.

Ilaoa, a candidate to start at center this fall, made sizeable Year 1 gains, as did Hatcher, who turned in a very strong spring as part of what Babers described as a "wide-open" competition on the perimeter. The 6-foot-2 Del Rio-Wilson weighs in at 232 pounds, up seven from his listing at UF last season.

It's also worth noting that Syracuse's returning defensive linemen didn't add considerable weight -- a nugget that means the largely inexperienced group will rely on quickness and timing at the head of Tony White's 3-3-5 scheme. Geer, a candidate to emerge as a contributor, actually dropped 22 pounds while projected starting edge defender Steve Linton is down six to 219.

Sophomore defensive tackle Terry Lockett is up five pounds to 270 ahead of what projects to be a very busy fall for him. Walk-on Kevon Darton, perhaps his primary backup, is down 29 pounds to 265.
