ARLINGTON, MA — A Topping Off Ceremony for the new Public Works Facility project on Grove Street in Arlington was held on August 9.

Hosted by the town’s project partners, the ceremony commemorated the project’s continued progress with the placement of the last steel beam, marking a major milestone.

“It is wonderful to see the new Public Works facility take shape,” Arlington Town Manager Sandy Pooler said in a statement. “It is appropriate to have a modern facility befitting of the vital services Public Works provides the Arlington community all year long. From managing major infrastructure like water and sewer and our roadways to maintaining our trees, parks and cemeteries their work is instrumental to the quality of life in Arlington.”

Prior to the placement of the steel beam, Department of Public Works (DPW) staff, construction teams, and representatives from project partners signed the white beam.

The completion of the new facility is scheduled for fall of 2023. DPW still continues to run its operations from the location.

“It’s nice to mark this project milestone with the staff and project team,” Michael Rademacher, Arlington'S Director of Public Works, said in a statement. “I want to commend the DPW staff for their flexibility and patience to continue delivering services from a tight and active construction site. We look forward to moving into the new facility that will centralize and improve our operations.”

The new building will be approximately 43,000 square feet and is comprised of workshops, employee facilities, maintenance shops, vehicle storage, an automated vehicle wash bay, and a two-story administrative office space fronting Grove Street.

Additional new site development features will include a new 6,000 square foot gambrel arch salt shed structure and a new and upgraded municipal fueling station.

In addition to the new construction, existing buildings are being renovated. Upon completion, the site will host the Department of Public Works, Inspectional Services, and the Information Technology and Facilities Departments.

“Despite supply chain issues being experienced globally, the project team of Commodore and Sydney have been creative in scheduling the project, which includes work on multiple buildings,” Allen Reedy, Arlington Permanent Town Building Committee Chair, said in a statement. “It’s great to see the vision of the new facilities that Weston & Sampson designed come to fruition.”

Project partners for the new Public Works Facility include Weston & Sampson, Sydney Project Management, and Commodore Builders.

The project is on budget and has a scheduled completion date of fall 2023. Read more about the project at arlingtonma.gov/projects.
