Fire broke out at Interco, a metal recycling facility near Granite City in Madison Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out at about 10 a.m. at the facility on Fox Industrial Drive. Employees were recycling batteries when the fire broke out. One employee suffered a burn injury in the fire and was taken to the hospital.

Reports from the scene said that an explosion started the fire, which is burning so hot that it melted siding on buildings that are two streets away, across a set of railroad tracks. The smoke from the fire could be seen for miles, and multiple departments are responding to assist.

Residents in a half-mile radius oft he facility are being asked to stay safely indoors, or shelter in place.
