A 21-year-old worker fell to his death as he installed a supported tubular welded frame scaffold, during the construction of a seven-story Brooklyn, NYC  building.

An OSHA investigation revealed that the young man was not using a fall-arrest harness, as required.

The incident occurred on Nov 13, 2020, and OSHA found that Everest Construction had failed to ensure the worker’s safety.

OSHA proposed $300,370 in penalties for two willful and two serious safety violations. The agency found the company:

Falls from heights remain the leading cause of fatalities in construction.

According to the NY Dept of Buildings (DOB), most worksite accidents are preventable if proper safety precautions are taken.

Clipping in safety harnesses when working near an open drop, installing/maintaining proper guardrails and worksite safeguards, also good housing keeping practices on the site, are all ways the potential for injury can be prevented before a tragedy occurs.

But if an accident does happen, it is important to speak up and report it immediately to both your supervisors at the site and to the Department.
